Please note that some users, particularly those with Apple devices, may experience the cookie control waking up on every screen. This can be fixed by clearing cache/cookies (or just the cookies from u3abeacon.org.uk)
Cookie control
Cookie control has been introduced to Beacon to give users control over the non-essential cookies Beacon saves in your browser. It also replaces the tick-box "This is a private computer - tick to store local settings" on the login screen.
The control appears on first use and documents the optional cookies that remember a range of handy preferences for your next visit. Click "I Do Not Accept" if you are using a public or shared computer. Closing the control without making a choice is the equivalent of "I Do Not Accept".
The cookie control will remember your choice (using a cookie in your browser) for 90 days.
The cookie control can be invoked at any time using the cog control on the bottom left of all Beacon screens.
Note that the control is global to Beacon and will appear on the Member's Portal.
Recent Members download
"Download Excel" and "Download PDF" have been added to the "Do with selected" action on the Recent Members screen.
E-mail Delivery Reports
The e-mail delivery report (E-mail delivery menu under Misc) will only be available for e-mails sent by Beacon in the past two years.

I haven't seen the Cookie Control yet today (8 Feb) and have been in and out of Beacon all day. Does "The control appears on first use" mean it only applies to a first time Beacon user or is the change just taking time to filter across servers?
Apologies my typo, it was always going to be 15th Feb at the earliest. Don't get too excited, it's more a case of keeping things legal.
Sorry, but I've got another question now. Will exactly the same cookie screen appear when members (ie not system users) log into the Members Portal?
"It also replaces the tick-box "This is a private computer - tick to store local settings" on the login screen." won't mean much to them because they don't see that screen when they log in. Nor do they know about preferences, printing labels etc. It will mean nothing to them.
We've been using the portal a lot during Covid to get members to register for our online monthly meetings and we're about to start renewals, when about 70% of members will be using it (we hope). It's been a struggle with some of them but we've made significant progress in the last few months. I want to explain the change to members as simply as possible, so that we don't go backwards in terms of their willingness to use the portal.
Thx Marion.
Cookies uses a product called civicuk.com and applies to all Beacon pages so includes the Members Portal. The thinking is that the Members Portal doesn't use cookies so ignoring the control or clicking anything has no effect - like loads of Websites out there that have this annoying feature.
If this causes issues then getting the cookie control to behave differently on different pages (if possible) or to change the wording will need to be considered.
So are you saying we should tell ordinary members to just ignore the wording and just click on "I do not accept"? And will it keep on appearing every time they use the portal?
Sorry, but I want to be as specific as possible as to what people will see and should do. Persuading some of them to use the portal has been a long process.
The Cookie control software will remember your choice for 90 days (would you believe in a cookie, although the information in this cookie is not encrypted). This seems pretty standard on sites we all come across all the time.
So if a member used the same browser/device, is not browsing in private mode and doesn't clear their cookies then they will only be challenged by the cookie control every 90 days.
I have not yet seen the cookie control banner - 17th Feb - and am getting very tired of having to find my u3a name on the lit every time I log in - should there be a way to remember it as there used to be?

A member who used Apple computers (tablet, mac etc.) said that clearing the cache solved this issue for them. You should always be able to invoke the cookie control using the black cog (bottom left).
