Update: a change, applied to the system at the end of February, was backed out on the evening of 5th May and should resolve the issue of multiple (100s) of entries in the E-mail delivery log when sending 500+ e-mails.
The change was applied as part of a series of actions in an effort to alleviate Cloudflare 502 errors but had no effect. As it is no longer needed and appears to have introduced the multiple log entry problem, the decision was taken to back it out.
Work is ongoing to resolve the issue of Site Administrators not being notified of Bounce. These errors are recorded in the E-mail delivery log so a regular review of the log is advised until this problem is resolved.
About this issue
We are aware of an an issue with the Beacon Email delivery log. We are working to fix this issue as an immediate priority.
For some users, emails sent out may be getting stuck on 'Despatched by Beacon' in the Email delivery log, rather than updating to Delivered or Opened as usual.
This does not mean that your email has not been delivered.
Emails are still being processed and delivered as normal. However, the delivery log may not be reporting the correct status at this time.
We are additionally aware that some users are not receiving notification emails from Beacon when an email is not delivered. This will be investigated once the pending fixes have been completed.
What we're doing to fix it
We have carried out and deployed changes to Beacon to enable more information about this issue to be traced and captured in the global system logs.
As a result of this work, we have now identified the probable cause of this issue. Queries relating to the updating of the email delivery log are not always completing successfully, which in turn causes the system to lock up and any subsequent queries to fail for a short period.
Work is ongoing to make modifications to the system code in order to resolve the issue. Once the work is complete, the changes will be tested and deployed.
We have completed the work on the new dedicated email acknowledgement server. This has taken the load off the main server which delivers Beacon to users, reducing the incidence of 502 errors and increasing the reliability of the email delivery log.
Work has continued on the request queue. This has involved refactoring some of the code associated with sending emails.
Fixes applied to the system on 15th and 28th April appear to have resolved the E-mail delivery update problems and so status for new log entries should not 'stick' at Despatched by Beacon'.
Note 1: These fixes will not retrospectively update previous log entries. These will stay as 'Despatched by Beacon'.
Note 2: In the E-mail delivery log, final good status is 'Delivered' Previously status 'Clicked' and 'Opened' may have been reported but both functions have been disabled for privacy and other reasons.
What you need to do in the meantime
Users should check the E-mail delivery log regularly and attend to e-mail address entries with Bounced or Dropped status.
Emails are still being processed and delivered as normal.
